Given the current events in Lebanon, Lebanese physicians working there have been in the news extensively lately. Some have chosen to leave in search of a more stable life; some have chosen to stay, and some have chosen not to move back to Lebanon in the first place. We will interview Lebanese physicians working in Lebanon and beyond to get their opinions about the events taking place in Lebanon, the future of medicine in Lebanon, and the role Lebanese physicians play worldwide in their respective fields, and their connections to their home county. We will highlight success stories, stories that were not so successful, and everything in between. Medical students, physicians-in-training, and attending physicians at different points in their careers will be interviewed. We hope you will find this podcast beneficial and exciting!

Our latest episode of The Lebanese Physicians Podcast with Louis Atallah, PhD, R and D lead Clinical AI and analytics at Phillips in Boston, MA, USA. This episode is co-hosted with Dr. MohammadAli Jardaly. Dr. Atallah is working mostly in tele ICU and eiCU monitoring developing AI algorithms to detect disease early, improve outcomes, and improve quality of care. In this episode, we discuss the role of AI currently and in the future in healthcare, its potential to improve quality of care, and assist healthcare workers and physicians in evaluating disease and monitoring patients.

Our guest is Dr. Ramy Khalil who is now based in Dubai, but is still director of medical informatics at PeopleOne Health, a direct primary healthcare company in the US that offers health plans for employers offering direct primary and preventive care to their employees thus cutting administrative costs.
Preventive and primary care suffers from lack of primary care physicians and primary care physician burnout in the United States and the MENA region due to low reimbursement and overwork. We discuss the role of AI and medical informatics in improving access to primary care enhancing quality of life for primary care physicians and job satisfaction while at the same improving patient care.

Ms. Abi Khalil is currently pursuing her PhD in Medical Informatics at the Sorbonne University in Paris. She is exploring the identification of key design and implementation features that are related to optimizing the usability, clinical relevance and outcomes of clinical decision support systems implemented
for the nursing process. We discuss her efforts to start this process at her current hospital, and the recent conference she organized among the major hospitals in Lebanon aimed at streamlining AI implementation and research at these different hospitals. Dr. Baban is medical director of the MedGlobal mission in Lebanon. We discuss the importance of sustainability and empowering local communities of people and healthcare workers to deliver preventative healthcare services in the areas they servce. The COVID-19 pandemic showed the world that our pandemic monitoring systems could not prevent and detect the scale of the pandemic in a timely manner. The responses around the world were variable and differed by region. In this episode co-hosted with MohammadAli Jardali, we discuss with Antoine Saab, PhD, Healthcare Quality and Development Manager at Lebanese Hospital Geitaoui-UMC, his project "Strengthening Lebanon's pandemic surveillance system through AI-driven automation of laboratory data", which will be funded by the Canadian AI4PEP Funding Program. We discuss the role and future of AI in healthcare, in pandemic monitoring, and in improving healthcare quality. An episode not to be missed.

Ms. Najm and Ms. Abi Hana have significant experience in substance use disorders and mental health awareness in Lebanon. Ms. Najm is also on a Hubert Humphrey Fulbright scholarship at VCU researching substance use disorders and prevention. In this episode, we discuss methods to prevent and treat substance use disorders and we discuss genetics and risk factors of the disease. We also discuss the push towards improving mental health awareness and reducing stigma in Lebanon through Ms. Abi Hana's experience advising the Ministry of Public Health on this issue. We also learn about stigma and substance use disorders in Europe through Dr. Khatib's experiences.

In this episode, we discuss Dr. Bizri's recent trip to Ukraine with MedGlobal in which she visited Lviv in Ukraine as part of a MedGlobal team invited by the Ministry of Health. The team developed a training program for healthcare workers to recognize mental health ailments in their colleagues early on.
Over the past decade, there have been multiple crises in a various areas around the world including Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Ukraine, Mali, and multiple others. On top of that, there has been the COVID-19 crisis. Healthcare workers have been affected significantly by these crises, and especially by COVID-19. Recognizing the mental health effects of these crises on healthcare workers is of utmost importance. Dr. Bizri highlights the importance of this point and discusses future plans for early recognition.
